SQE for Foreign Qualified Lawyers

WE SPECIALISE IN HELPING FOREIGN QUALIFIED LAWYERS (FQLs) TO PASS THE SQE AND REQUALIFY.

We’ve helped thousands of international legal professionals to requalify to practice law in England and Wales and we’ve established a well-deserved reputation with FQLs as the go-to provider in the marketplace.

For Law Firms
sqe foreign qualified lawyers

The SRA reports that there are over 7,500 registered Foreign Qualified Lawyers (FQLs) practising in the UK today. A number that’s tripled over the past decade. With demand from UK law firms for talented international lawyers remaining high, it means more and more FQLs are taking the SQE each year.

Yet all-too-often their needs aren’t catered by providers who design their services with domestic candidates in mind. As an experienced SQE provider that was founded by Foreign Qualified Lawyers for Foreign Qualified Lawyers, QLTS understands – first hand – the unique requirements candidates and employers have in this marketplace.

We’ve been helping FQLs to pass the SQE (and its predecessor, the QLTS) for over 15 years. And with with impressive success rates, our SQE courses and resources have been designed with FQLs firmly in mind at every stage of the process.

By partnering with QLTS for FQLs, we’re improving pass rates and taking the hassle out of requalification for UK law firms.

QLTS School was one of the leading provider of the QLTS – the previous route to qualification for foreign lawyers before the introduction of the SQE. The SQE is largely modelled on the QLTS assessments, which gives us unique insight and longstanding expertise in preparing overseas-qualified lawyers for this transition.

We understand the specific challenges international practitioners face when qualifying in England and Wales. Our courses focus on bridging jurisdictional gaps, developing strong exam technique, and providing realistic practice for the SQE – ensuring efficient, targeted preparation tailored to experienced lawyers.

The SQE assessment is the one route to qualifying as a solicitor in England and Wales. Candidates from both the UK and abroad need to complete the SQE exams and meet a set of requirements before qualifying. However, some international candidates can be exempt from SQE2 if they meet certain criteria. But while the qualification is the same for all candidates, the journey to requalification for FQLs can be markedly different. Not least because Foreign Qualified Lawyers are often travelling to England and Wales for the first time. It’s this in-depth knowledge of the FQL marketplace that makes QLTS an indispensable partner for UK law firms looking to enrich their team with international talent.

Our SQE1 preparation course provides everything you need to master the SQE assessments in one structured programme.

It includes comprehensive textbooks, concise summary notes, digital flashcards, revision videos and podcasts, AI-powered learning tools, and an extensive bank of practice questions. You will also complete 30 full mock tests designed to reflect the style, difficulty, and time pressure of the real exam.

Throughout the course, you benefit from expert tutor guidance and structured support to help you stay on track and perform at your best.

Very little. Once your firm partners with QLTS, all we ask is that you signpost your Foreign Qualified Lawyers to us. We manage eligibility guidance, onboarding, SQE preparation, and ongoing support directly with candidates, ensuring minimal administrative effort for your firm.

QLTS provides end-to-end SQE support for Foreign Qualified Lawyers. This includes initial guidance on eligibility and exemptions, structured SQE preparation, extensive mock tests, and ongoing academic support through to qualification. Where relevant, we also guide candidates through the practical steps of requalifying in England and Wales.

QLTS for Foreign Qualified Lawyers is offered on a simple, per-candidate basis, with volume pricing available for firms enrolling multiple candidates. Pricing depends on the level of support required and is designed to be transparent and predictable. Full details are shared following a short introductory discussion.
